President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) revealed the contents of his chat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by telephone on Wednesday (27/4/2022) the day after tomorrow. Jokowi said that Volodymyr had asked Indonesia for weapons assistance.
This was revealed through a video statement by the President of the Republic of Indonesia via the Presidential Secretariat YouTube, Friday (29/4/2022).
Jokowi revealed that the discussion between the two sides was related to the latest conditions of the war that took place between Russia and Ukraine.
“During a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine, I received an update regarding the development of the current situation in Ukraine. During the conversation, various requests for weapons assistance from Indonesia were discussed,” said Jokowi.
Jokowi then said that Indonesia could not send weapons assistance to other countries. These rules have been established in accordance with the mandate of the Indonesian constitution and the principles of Indonesia’s foreign policy.
“I emphasize that in accordance with the mandate of the Indonesian constitution and the principles of Indonesia’s foreign policy, it is forbidden to provide weapons assistance to other countries,” he said.
Nevertheless, Indonesia is very open to providing humanitarian assistance.
Furthermore, in the telephone connection, Jokowi conveyed to Volodymyr that Indonesia hoped for peace from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
It is hoped that peace can occur through the efforts of both parties to negotiate. Jokowi also invited Volodymyr to attend the G20 event in Bali in November 2022.
According to Jokowi, the G20 event has a role as a catalyst in the recovery of the world economy which was shaky due to the Covid-19 pandemic and also the war in Ukraine.
“It is in this context that in a telephone conversation yesterday I invited President Zelensky to attend the G20 summit.”
