The rise of illegal online loans (borrowing) has made many people in Indonesia already victims of illegal loans, to the point that they are in debt.
Victims of illegal loans often get unfair treatment when they are billed to pay debts.
Even so, for people who have already become victims of illegal loans, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkopolhukam) Mahfud MD emphasized that they do not have to pay when they are billed.
“Those who are already victims, don’t pay,” said Mahfud MD in a press conference broadcast on the YouTube of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Tuesday (19/10/2021).
According to Mahfud MD, the existence of illegal borrowing is not valid because it does not meet the objective and subjective requirements as stipulated in civil law.
He said the parties involved in making and running an illegal loan could be charged with multiple articles.
“For example, threats of violence, threats to spread indecent photos for people who have debts or do not pay them,” said Mahfud.
He suggested that people who get terrorized should immediately report to the nearest police station
Furthermore, Mahfud MD emphasized that the police would provide protection to the victims of the illegal loans.
He promised to take firm action against illegal borrowings, while those that are legal or already have a business license are expected to develop even better.
He hopes that in the future the loans that already have permits will be able to solve the community’s financial needs.
“We will only take firm action against illegal lending, for other loans or legal ones, please develop because that’s what we expect,” he explained.
